Guadalajara is considered the Mexican Silicon Valley. Hitachi GST’s site in Guadalajara manufactures the HDD industry's most technologically advanced magnetic head (slider). Currently, 5,000 employees support a round-the-clock schedule -- two 12-hour shifts each day, seven days a week. In 2006 the site produced close to 200 million units, 65% of all Hitachi-manufactured sliders.
Since its establishment as an electric typewriter factory more than 20 years ago, the site has taken on increasingly complex missions -- head stack assembly, head gimbal assembly and slider manufacturing. In recent years this site has successfully assumed challenging roles in testing new slider technologies, from nano, pico, femto to perpendicular magnetic recording. The small, delicate magnetic heads demand advanced technical procedures. Employees focus on manufacturing efficiency through process excellence, lean initiatives and small group activities. The team also assists the San Jose Development and Engineering groups with early manufacturing technologies.
Hitachi Mexico is known as a socially responsible company. The plant redesigned its production lines to accommodate disabled employees under a Project Inclusion initiative that was recognized by the federal government. Additionally, the site’s conservation and environmental preservation efforts have won numerous clean industry certifications and awards, including the highest possible recognition, the Environmental Excellence Award, from Mexico President Vicente Fox.
