Why is my External Hitachi 3TB drive not listed or visible in My Computer
on my Windows XP system?

The drive may need to have the partition cleaned, then initialize the drive as MBR (Master Boot Record) in "Disk Management" this will allow you to format the drive utilizing the full capacity.
